Attraction during business travels in Dubai

Frances Gordon suggests in his book "Oman, Yemen and United Arab Emirates", in EDT edition:
«Khor Dubai (the Dubai Creek) is the living heart of the city, one of the inevitable stages for travellers. Abra boats cross it all day in both directions, with a one-way ticket of 50 fil/ person. It is possible to rent an abra boat for about 50 dinars (for the boat, not for person): usually the captain brings you to the Al-Maktoum bridge and back to the starting point with a 45 minutes excursion. Once on the Deira side, remember to make a trip to the docks, where the dhows - small boats that come and go from ports of Asia and Persian Gulf with all kinds of goods - are loaded and unloaded. It is possible to see these typical Dubai boats and you could be so lucky to be asked on one of them by the captain. Late afternoon is the best moment for this kind of trip, as well as for a trip in the famous gold, scent and spice suqs, with their typical perfumed and bright ambience. On the Bur Dubai side, go for a ride in the historic Bastakia district, on the riverside. Here you can find the traditional wind towers, ancient residences of rich South Iran merchants. Built between 1900 and 1930, these buildings are part of a big restoration programme, but can still be visited. Dubai Suq too, with its wooden roof and different textile shops, must be visited.
Dubai Museum
Between shopping activities and fun on the beach, take your time to visit this museum ( - 3531862; AI-Fahidi St, Bastakia; adults/children 3/1dinars; Q 8.30-20.30 from Saturday to Thursday, 14.30-20.30 on Fridays). It is in the Al-Fahidi Fort, and dates back to 1787, probably the most ancient building in the city.
Jumeira Mosque
It is the most striking building of the Emirates. This mosque (AI-lumeira Rd, Jumeira), with its pink-coloured sandstone and a beautiful minaret, is famous for being the only mosque in the whole U.A.E. open to non-Muslims. Sheikh Mohammed’s Centre for Cultural Understanding offers interesting “Open Doors, Open Minds” tours ( - 344 7755; smccu@emirates.net.ae; admission free; (5 10 Sunday and Thursday) for non-Muslims that want to approach religion and culture of the U.A.E. Tours last one hour and visitors can ask questions to the guides. Remember to dress in a proper manner (short pants and T-shirts are not allowed. Women must cover their hair).
Buri al-Arab
If you want to see how a large part of people live in Dubai, we recommend a trip to Burj al-Arab ( - 3017771; AI-Jumeira Rd, Umm Suqeim; adults/children 200/75 dinars, to spend in Burj coffee bars, shops and restaurants), famous temple of city opulence. The very hotel management did not believe that Burj al-Arab would become one of the most important touristic attractions in Dubai. Today, it is an inevitable stop for all travellers. Data and numbers speak for themselves: 202 accommodations, with 1200 staff members. Prices range from 3.500 to 25.000 dinars per night. During the day visitors are not allowed to visit the rooms, rotating beds or private Royal Suite cinema, but it is possible to see the beautiful foyer, the dancing waters of the fountains, the gold plating worthy of the Versailles Palace, the beautiful view, from Al-Muntaha restaurant, on the nearby Palm Island estate, its fantastic panoramic lift, with a speed of 6 metres per second along its 27 floors. You must telephone to check when hotel allows visits, because the management reserves the right to discontinue them in crowded periods.
A proper attire is required: jeans, shorts, casual wear, and sandals for men are not allowed.
